News from the CKAN team

Last week CKAN team members converged on London for a code sprint. Some were locals while others came from Cambridge, Newcastle, Liverpool, Sheffield, Dublin and Berlin. We got a lot done. Here are some highlights:
  • The UK government's data portal, data.gov.uk, has been upgraded to the latest version of CKAN. This is a big upgrade and there are lots of new improvements.
  • We're setting up a "CKAN hosted" service, to allow anyone to quickly and easily get their own instance of CKAN as a central, easy-to-find catalogue of their online data.
  • We're working on CKAN's geospatial features - improving the search function so users can ask for datasets relevant to a place or area of interest.
  • We're integrating CKAN with Google Docs, so that users with a Google Docs spreadsheet can load, create and edit datasets in a CKAN repository, or even load data from another source and upload it to CKAN. We're really excited about this - watch this space for more info in the new year!

My own most important contribution, as the brand-new community co-ordinator for CKAN, was to bring the lovingly hand-crafted mince pies.
