Getting ready for the upcoming CKAN releases

The next CKAN 2.11 release is around the corner, plus a security update for CKAN 2.10

26-CKAN Updates-01

There has been a lot of activity in the past few weeks to get ready for the upcoming new CKAN stable version. The CKAN 2.11 release comes packed with enhancements across the board, plenty of performance improvements and exciting new features like the Table Designer (we'll tell you more about this in a separate post). All official extensions are ready for the new version, and you can easily test yours following the instructions on this issue. We have compiled a wiki page with tips on upgrading from CKAN 2.10 to 2.11, and as you can see it keeps getting easier and easier to upgrade to a new CKAN version (compared for instance to the 2.9 to 2.10 guide). The CHANGELOG will contain all the additional migration information needed.

If all goes to plan the scheduled release date for CKAN 2.11 is Wednesday, August 21st, 2024.

On that date we will also release CKAN 2.10.5. As usual, this patch release contains important security updates and fixes, so users are strongly encouraged to upgrade their sites to apply all the included patches. Starting with this version, we are starting to upgrade some of the CKAN requirements to address reported vulnerabilities. Following our release policy, these should not break compatibility with previous patch versions, but they might require an additional upgrade step on source installs (pip install -U -r requirements.txt). The minimum Python version for CKAN 2.10.5 will be Python 3.8.

Finally, in accordance to our supported versions policy, when CKAN 2.11 is out, it will be time to end official support for CKAN 2.9, initially released four years ago. Please start planning the upgrade to a newer version.

As always, don't hesitate to reach out on one of our community channels if you have any questions.
