In an effort to keep our community informed and engaged, we recently conducted a survey to determine the name for our new CKAN update series. The survey aimed to gather preferences not only for the series name but also for the types of updates and preferred channels for receiving them. The survey was quick, consisting of four questions, and took less than a minute to complete. It was designed to capture your preferences effectively and efficiently. Here’s a detailed look at the results and some key insights we gathered.

Insight: The preference for straightforward names is clear, with "CKAN Updates" being the most favored option. This suggests that our community values direct and uncomplicated communication.

We asked participants what types of updates they would like to see more of in our CKAN series. Here’s what they had to say:

  • Community highlights - 40.54%
  • Current developments - 62.16%
  • New features and releases - 67.57%
  • Success stories - 51.35%
  • Technical tutorials and guides - 62.16%
  • Best practices and tips - 62.16%
  • Other - 5.41%

Insight: There is a strong interest in practical and informative content, with a particular emphasis on new features, technical tutorials, and best practices. This will guide us in curating content that is both useful and engaging for our users.

Question 3: Preferred Channels for Receiving Updates

Participants were asked where they would prefer to receive these updates. The responses were as follows:

  • CKAN website (blog) - 75.68%
  • LinkedIn - 54.05%
  • Twitter - 32.43%
  • Mastodon - 8.11%
  • Email Inbox - 67.57%
  • Other - 5.41%

Insight: The CKAN website (blog) and email inbox are the top preferred channels, indicating that users favor traditional and reliable methods for receiving updates.

Question 4: Additional Thoughts and Comments

We received several insightful comments from our participants, here are a few notable ones:

  • Curated Newsletters: One user suggested that a newsletter from the perspective of the product owner could be beneficial, and mentioned "CKAN Waves" as a fitting name for this format.
  • Inspirational Formats: Another comment highlighted the effectiveness of the concise and upbeat style of the "TLDR CKAN," inspired by a successful Canadian newsletter.
  • Time-Stamped Updates: Including the time period in the update name, such as "CKAN Highlights - June 2024," was another suggestion.
  • Bug Solutions and Roadmaps: Some participants expressed a desire to see solutions to major bugs and issues, as well as a roadmap and recent developments.
  • Extension Catalog: An updated extension catalog and more information on available extensions were also requested.

Insight: These comments reflect a desire for detailed, useful, and well-organized information that not only keeps the community informed but also empowers them to actively engage with and contribute to the CKAN ecosystem.

Conclusion

Based on these insightful responses, we will be naming our update series "CKAN Updates" to align with the majority preference for straightforwardness. We will also focus on delivering content that includes new features, technical tutorials, and best practices, primarily through our website and email updates but also on social media.
