This special edition highlights an important real-world CKAN implementation from Sigma2, the organization responsible for national e-infrastructure for research in Norway.
Norway’s NIRD Research Data Archive provides long-term archival storage for researchers across disciplines. As scientific datasets grew in size, complexity, and usage, the legacy system needed a full redesign: modern standards, improved workflows, better metadata, and a scalable, future-proof platform.
To meet these needs, Sigma2 rebuilt the archive using CKAN, preserving critical research assets while unlocking new functionality for the next decade of open scientific data.
What This Project Is About
Sigma2’s goal was to transform the NIRD Research Data Archive into a platform capable of:
- reliable long-term research data preservation
- flexible metadata management
- improved user-facing workflows
- standards-based interoperability
- scalable architecture for future demands
What You’ll Learn
Join our CKAN Monthly Live to see how Sigma2 transformed the NIRD Research Data Archive from a legacy system into a modern, scalable CKAN + PortalJS-based one, while preserving its critical assets.
This is a rare opportunity to see a national research archive rebuilt using open-source components — with practical takeaways for anyone working on data preservation, research infrastructure, or national repositories.
Speaker
Adil Hasan
Data Manager & Archive Architect, Sigma2
Worked on data management of large datasets from 1996, starting with particle physics experiments, and then everything. Worked on the first pilot attempts to create digital archives in the USA. Worked on pilot implementations of Data Grids and long-term repositories.
