The Transport Data Commons Initiative has built a shared platform for global mobility data. Based on CKAN, the TDC Portal serves as a data catalogue that allows international organisations such as the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Joint Research Center (JRC) of the European Commission to manage and share their data in one common space.

How can we accelerate sustainable transport through open data? By building shared infrastructure that connects institutions, researchers, and policymakers around the world.

At the next CKAN Monthly Live, we’re spotlighting the Transport Data Commons Portal — a CKAN-based platform that enables global collaboration through transport-related data.

What is the Transport Data Commons?
The Transport Data Commons Initiative (TDCI) brings together individuals and organizations who care deeply about sustainable mobility and the smart use of data in this sector.

Their mission:
➡️ To create a common platform where transport data can be shared, analyzed, and reused to inform better decisions and enable practical solutions for a low-carbon future.

Introducing the TDC Portal
Last year, TDCI partnered with Datopian to build the TDC Portal, a major milestone in the initiative's development.

Built on CKAN, the portal acts as a shared catalogue for transport data across multiple global stakeholders:

  • 🌐 UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe)
  • 🏛 JRC (Joint Research Centre of the European Commission)
  • 🧪 IIASA (International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis)

These organizations can now publish and manage data in a single, unified space — while researchers benefit from streamlined access to consistent datasets for transport modeling and simulations.

What You’ll Learn
In this session, you’ll get a guided introduction to the TDC Portal and see how CKAN makes it possible to power multi-stakeholder platforms at scale.

Topics:

- What is the Transport Data Commons Initiative?
- Why was the TDC Portal created?
- How does the portal work — and how is it being used today?
- How CKAN powers the backend — and how a user-friendly interface built with PortalJS supports accessible data discovery
